- <p> DIED. MARGARET, DUCHESS OF ARGYLL, 80, dazzling British socialite
- who was literally at the top before a sensational divorce case
- knocked her reeling; in London. The daughter of a Scottish textile
- millionaire, Margaret Whigham was renowned for her beauty, and
- no society page of the period was complete without mention of
- her. After her 1933 wedding to American stockbroker and golfer
- Charles Sweeny, her social supremacy was confirmed in the Cole
- Porter hit lyric, "You're the top,/ You're Mussolini,/ You're
- Mrs. Sweeny,/ You're Camembert." Her fame turned to notoriety,
- however, when her second husband, the 11th Duke of Argyll, sued
- her for divorce in 1959, accusing her of "multiple adultery."
- Following the divorce, her fortunes fell, and in February 1990
- she was evicted from the Grosvenor House hotel for failing to
- pay rent.
